Let’s start by giving Dach a little slack. An injury kept him out of his first all-important NHL training camp in 2019, slowing his progress. Dach went on to have a relatively successful rookie campaign scoring 8 goals and distributing 15 assists in 64 games.

The next speed bump came at the World Juniors, when Dach broke his wrist while playing for Team Canada. He is back, but only played 18 games last season from March 27 to May 3.

This year – finally – Dach arrived at training camp healthy and ready to take a quantum leap.

But it did not happen.

In 30 games, the 6-foot-4, 197-pound center scored 5 goals and 8 assists, averaged 1.73 shots on goal and won only 96 of 294 face-offs. This winning percentage of 32 , 7 ranks dead last among 158 players who made 100 or more draws.

So how does Dach join the crème de la crème of the league? By working his tail to improve in almost every facet of the game:

• First and foremost, Dach must complete A-grade opportunities. MacKinnon, McDavid, Matthews, Laine, Svechnikov and their teammates Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat often don’t let these chances pass up for nothing. It is imperative that Dach find a way to follow in their footsteps.

• Then get to work on the faceoffs. When a professional golfer loses his touch on the greens, he spends hours and hours making 3, 4 and 5 foot putts until they become automatic. Same thing here. Take 50, 75, 100 a day. See how much Toews can impart his wisdom. Spend time with Coach Yanic Perreault when possible. Eventually he will see the results.

• Interim coach Derek King recently explained that Dach has to be better off the puck. It’s the same criticism Dylan Strome (also a former No. 3 overall pick) received from King and former coach Jeremy Colliton. Players who cannot understand this will never join the ranks of the elite. “Look, he’s going to be in this organization for a while, hopefully, because he’s a good hockey player,” King said. “But he has to learn to play without that puck. You might as well do it now (and) not wait until your late twenties.

• Dach’s play along the boards could also be better. A lot of it comes down to adding muscle, so it’s imperative that Dach hits the weight room in the next few seasons.

Now here’s the big question: How coachable is Dach and does he have the work ethic to really grow his game?

Over the decades, Chicagoans have been fortunate enough to see some of the best athletes of all time: Hawks’ Mikita, Hull, Kane and Toews; the Bears’ Payton, Sayers and Singletary; the Bulls Jordan, Pippen and Sloan; the Cubs’ Sandberg and Ron Santo; and Frank Thomas of the White Sox.

None rested on their laurels or their draft position. They all set to work to become the generational talents of their time.

Soon we’ll see if Dach – who has the physical gifts to become a productive player – has the same drive.

“It’s a tough position – in the middle – especially for a youngster like that,” King said. “He’s so used to coasting and using his skills. But the skills won’t get you far.

“You have to learn to play when you don’t have the puck. These are just small things. And it can be done because it has nothing to do with skill. …

“You just have to want to do it.”

Croatian defender Marin Cacic has died aged 23 after collapsing in training

Croatian footballer Marin Cacic tragically died three days after being in a coma following his sudden collapse in training with his team NK Nehaj Sinj.

After collapsing during the session, he was immediately rushed to hospital where the 23-year-old man was diagnosed with heart failure.

He was then placed in a comatose state as medics fought tirelessly to save the young man’s life, although their efforts were sadly unsuccessful and Cacic was pronounced dead on December 23.

Before the news of his death, his current team posted a message on Facebook sending their thoughts and wishes to the grim situation, writing: “Marin, Senj and your Nehaj are with you !!!

“Fight, because you only know that way !! I know very well that there is no difference between training and a game for you, but add gas to this ‘game’ and win !!! “

Unfortunately, his club would later confirm his death on social networks.

Born in Gospić in 1998, Cacic was a much-loved center-back who has since received touching tributes from friends and former teammates.

At the start of his playing career, Cacic was enrolled in a youth school for gifted players in Rijeka, although he was unsuccessful and came to Nehaj in 2017 at the age of 19.

At such a young age, Cacic had already enjoyed an impressive career which had taken him to several different countries.

The defender initially left Nehaj in August 2018 to ply his trade for Italian minnows Isernia, spending a season in Serie D before returning to his home country to play for NK Trnje Zagreb, although he still spent there less time.

He joined Nehaj for the second time just six months after moving to Zagreb, spending 12 months with the club before signing with NK Jedinstvo.

Cacic played for Nehaj for three separate periods, joining for the third and final time in August this year, before tragedy struck four months later.

One of its former clubs, the Bosnian club NK Jedinstvo, paid tribute to Cacic by writing on its website: “Rest in peace, Sailor, forever in our hearts”.

European football has seen a number of notable players crumble in matches over the past year, most notably Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest in Denmark’s opener at Euro 2020.

Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck also fell onto the pitch undisputed in a recent league clash, although he did not find himself in as dire a situation as Eriksen.

A recent Champions League clash between Sheriff Tiraspol and Real Madrid saw winger Adama Traore collapse on the turf clutching his chest, with field medics instantly rushing to treat the Mali international.

Recruiting a skilled workforce has always been a challenge for companies, but a proven method that dates back centuries is gaining in importance as the need for highly skilled workers keep growing.

Apprenticeships date back at least to the Middle Ages in Europe, when professional guilds oversaw the way skills such as blacksmithing and building trades were taught to new generations. According to educators and a growing number of companies, this tradition is experiencing a rapid resurgence and is proving to be a very effective way for companies to secure a growing pool of skilled workers.

Cultivate your own talent

According to Jennifer Moorefield, associate vice president for economic development and business training at Greenville Technical College, learning are among the most effective methods for companies to develop a highly skilled workforce in areas such as advanced manufacturing.

The state’s technical and community colleges have decades of experience partnering with businesses to develop educational programs tailored to the training needs of the industry, she says. This is especially true in fields requiring a high degree of technical training in robotics and mechatronics, precision machine tools, electronic engineering and automotive technology, among others.

Apprenticeships tailored to the specific needs of a business help ensure a supply of essential workers. “Sponsoring an apprentice is a great way [for a company] to build the pipeline, ”says Moorefield.

In South Carolina: there are 37,282 apprentices in 2,668 occupations

Jennifer Little, director of career counseling services at Spartanburg Community College, says companies increasingly understand that apprenticeship programs are a very effective way to recruit “the best and the brightest” talent.

She adds that companies have also found that the investments they make in apprentices tend to result in loyal employees. The skills acquired by apprentices also tend to provide them with more employment options.

“Technicians coming out of these programs are in high demand,” says Little.

BMW: a case study

Recognizing that the employees it trained to staff the company’s North American automotive manufacturing center in Greer in the mid-1990s would eventually retire, BMW Manufacturing launched its Scholars program in 2011 to develop a pool of new talents.

BMW Director of Talent and Training Programs Paul Sinanian said the company recognizes that the traditional method of simply hiring new workers from an existing talent pool would not be sufficient to meet the needs. of the company. From this recognition was born the Scholars program.

BMW primarily works with four regional technical colleges – Spartanburg Community College and Greenville, Tri-County, and Piedmont Technical Colleges – where students take full-time classes and apprenticeships at BMW for approximately 20 to 25 hours per week.

Alicia Hyder graduated from the program in 2019 and is now working at the Greer factory. She says the real world experience has been an invaluable part of her education.

“I enjoyed being able to do practical work while preparing for my degree,” she says.

Hyder has since received a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology management from USC-Upstate while working for BMW.

Sinanian says the company is looking to expand the Scholars program beyond high school to include high school students in the future, as the technical demands of advanced manufacturing processes continue to grow.

“Our job is to extend the pipeline outside the company,” says Sinanian. “Every opportunity to bring more to the pipeline, we explore. “

The beginning of the first part of this article is certainly worth repeating: human capital is your greatest competitive advantage, an intangible asset that deserves your continued time and attention. I’ve covered the first two of four key talent management strategies used by business leaders of all sizes to increase the value of their human capital:

  • Retain the right people.
  • Hire strong talent.

Here, I’ll explain why the last two strategies underpin your ability to retain and recruit great people and develop them into high performing team members who can drive practice growth:

  • Create a high performing, patient-centric and growth-driven culture.
  • Increase the value of human capital through training and development.

Culture

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that culture is a delicate aspect of a business with little correlation to performance and profits. Your culture will make or break your practice, especially in today’s environment. The pandemic has caused many people to quit their jobs after being forced to reassess what is important to them personally and professionally. Good people can’t stand working in a lousy workplace anymore. To retain team members who are worth keeping, you need to restore trust and create a positive culture.

Simply put, culture is defined by:

  • what your employees think about coming to work each day, what they think about working for you, and what they think about their teammates.
  • how your patients feel when they call or walk into your office. The lobby, the reception, the way new patients are treated and the way the paperwork is handled are all part of your culture.
  • how you feel when you are in the office and with your team.

Your culture is unique to you, your team and your practice. Unlike anything you do, your distinctive culture cannot be replicated. It’s important to intentionally create and nurture one that you are proud of and that your team and patients appreciate. It is also important to make sure that you enjoy going to work at your workplace.

Rotating the right people costs money, time and energy. Lack of staff because you can’t hire the people you need negatively affect the team, the patients, and your bottom line. When it comes to retention and recruiting, culture is how you will meet (or fail to meet) the needs and wants of talented people, which in turn will satisfy your patients.

Training and development

To have a successful practice, you must continue to grow year after year. At the very least, you must continually compensate for rising costs and natural patient attrition. Of course, your goals should be way above that, but you can’t increase your production and income goals without training your team to a higher level.

Training and development empowers your team to achieve higher goals, support retention by building engagement and loyalty, and energize recruiting efforts by building a reputation that attracts strong candidates. The good team members you already have and the best talent you want to hire will be motivated to improve their skills through training so that they can perform even better. They want to be developed through new experiences, challenged to do more and have opportunities to grow and move forward.

Offer training as a privilege and an advantage. Provide development opportunities by delegating daily tasks, assigning special projects and creating the role of team leader. The more your team is able to do, the more your business is able to earn. And unlike those who think training will make people leave, investing in training and development is part of a great culture that makes the right people want to stay and the right people to apply.

Is yours a 21st century practice?

Renowned management consultant, educator and author Peter Drucker wrote: “The most valuable assets of a 21st century institution, whether commercial or non-commercial, will be its knowledge, workers and productivity.2 Good culture, combined with effective training and development, has a direct and immediate positive effect on asset value.

The financial benefits of having high-value human capital include the superior patient experience they are able to deliver, leading to improved retention and referrals, acceptance of treatment, and growth of new patients. Plus, you get maximum productivity from top performers working as a team to get more done, faster, and better, resulting in greater profitability.
